LES MISERABLES INFO

Les Miserables in a nutshell

What is Les Miserables? In a nutshell, it is a story By Victor Hugo about redemption, obsession, loyalty, and friendship. It is a story about an ex-covict named Jean Valjean who is put in prison for stealing a loaf of bread and remains there for 19 years. After being released, Valjean is shunned by all the innkeepers and finds shelter with a bishop, who gives him a bed and supper. He repays him by stealing the bishop's silver. When Valjean's brought back to him, the bishop lies and tells the soldiers that he had given silver to him, and when they leave, the Bishop tells him that he had bought his soul with it and he must use it to become a better man. When Valjean left the Bishop's home, a sudden anger overcame him, and he stole a small coin from a passing chiminey sweep. After the anger passed, Valjean realised what he had done and swore to make it up. He broke his parole and went on the run.
Several years later, Jean Valjean (under the guise of M. Madeline) had become the mayor of Montreuil-Sur-Mer and very rich from the factory that he owned. He used the money he made to improve the lives of the poor and suffering in the town.
Inspector Javert who had been Jean Valjean's parole officer, had begun to hunt the man to try to get him behind bars again. But he was made Inspector and had been tranfered to Jean Valjean's town to head the police department there. He grows suspcious of the mayor, especially after lifting a heavy cart after an accident. Meanwhile, one of the factory women, Fantine, was dismissed for having a child and not being married. She desperatly sold everything she owns to keep her daughter from being put out onto the streets and healthy, and is attacked by a man who was making fun of her. She attacks the man back, but was arrested by Javert. The Mayor tells him to let her go, and after she is released she faints from illness.
The mayor takes her to the infirmary, where he discovers that the woman had a child named Cosette that was being taken care of by an innkeeper and his wife. Javert later comes to Valjean and confesses that he had turn in a report saying that he suspected that the Mayor was the escaped convict Jean Valjean, and asks to be dismissed from his duty. He also mentions that the "real" Jean Valjean had been found and that he was going to be tried. Unable to see a man jailed in his place, Valjean goes to the trial and confesses to the court his real name and who he was.Valjean made it back in time to hear Fantine's last request; for him to take care of her daughter Cosette. Javert arrived and his prescene shocked her into death. Valjean was arrested and put in jail, but he escaped and made his way to Paris, in hopes of lossing the police and Javert. But he was caught, and taken back to Toulon (The prison) Towards October, Jean Valjean escaped once again after rescuing a fellow convict on a boat during an accident. He plunged himself into the sea and when the search for him was given up, he dug up the money he had hidden and made his way to the inn were Cosette was being kept.
Cosette, meanwhile was not being treated as the two innkeepers had said in their letters to Fantine. Beaten, underfed, and a kitchen drudge, she meets Valjean on Christmas Eve after being told to fetch water from the spring. Valjean offers the innkeepers (whose names where M. and Mdme. Thenardier) 1500 francs to take Cosette. The two walk to Paris and is persued by Javert shortly after. They take shelter from him by entering a convent, and the man who Valjean saved years ago in the town offers Valjean a job as gardener, and helps get Cosette in the school. Thus, many years pass.
Years go by, Cosette is now a woman and longs for the outside world. They leave the safety of the convent and venture out into Paris and take a home a Rue Plumet. While out in the parks, she meets and falls in love with a mysterious young man, and he likewise falls in love with her. He is Marius Pontmercy; a poor student and a follower of the the students revolt against the French Goverment. They are planning an uprising and are waiting for a good oppertunity to strike, which happens to be when a French goverment official who spe aks for the poor dies. Valjean and Cosette are visiting the poor and are met up again with The Thenardiers, who trap him and order him to give him a large sum of money. Pontmercy overhears the plot and goes to the police, in hopes of stopping the man's plot. He see's his beloved and helps foil the plot to exort the man. Javert sees Valjean when he seizes the place where Pontmercy and the Thenardier family lives, but is unable to catch him. Meanwhile, Marius asks The Thenardiers daughter, Eponine to find where the girl lives. She finds it and they ;finally meet and swear there love for one another.
The breaking point in Paris as the one savior for the poor dies. The revolution begins. Javert is sent to spy at the barricades and is captured, sentenced to die 10 minutes before the barricades falls. Jean Valjean wants to move to England but finally finds out that Cosette had been seeing Marius and goes to the barricades, where he would die rather than give up Cosette. He meets up with Javert and saves the leader's (named Enjolras)and is given the opprutunity to kill Javert. He, however cuts his bonds and sets him free. When the barricades fall everyone except Jean Valjean and Marius are killed, though Marius is badly wounded. Valjean makes his escape through the sewers presued by Javert, with Marius on his back is
once again met with Thenardier. He offers Valjean the key to get out in exchange for the boy's valuables. Jean gets out, only to meet up with Javert. He pleads with him to let him take Marius home, which Javert grants, and after delivering the boy asks him to go home to say goodbye to his daughter, which he also grants. Going inside, Valjean looks for Javert, but does not see him. Only later does he discover that Javert had thrown himself into the Seine River.
Months later, Marius recovers, and he and Cosette are engaged. Marius finds out that Cosette's father is the ex-convict Jean Valjean and accuses him of murdering Javert in the barricades. After their wedding Marius says that Valjean should not see his daughter anymore. Thenardier, who knew that Pontmercy was alive and now back with his rich family, tries to con money from him for information on Jean Valjean. He tells Marius that he "stole" Cosette away from him and murdered a young revolution, and shows him a ring, Marius's ring. Marius understands and realises that Valjean had saved his life. In excitement, he and Cosette go to Jean Valjean.Jean Valjean however was slowly dying from the loss of Cosette and loneliness. When the couple arrive, Valjean is close to death. He tells Cosette of her past before passing on, and meeting Fantine and  all those who died on the barricade in Heaven.
