Jean Valjean Valjean is the one person Javert focuses on the most during his career and life. Javert's also mystified that despite being a convict, he was able to redeem himself. You could say that Javert's very soul and conscience of right and wrong. It was when Jean Valjean sets him free at the barricades, it totally threw Javert off his normal balance. And when he lets Jean go home, that completely destroyed him. |

Fantine Fantine is important to Javert in several ways. First, her arrest and ordered release by the Mayor (Jean Valjean in guise) cased Javert to denounce him as what he supposed to be the ex-convict of Valjean, though he thought the real Jean Valjean had been found. This caused Valjean to be forced to reveal himself, and have the police on his track again, namely Javert. When Javert arrested at Fantine's sick bed, it killed her, and Valjean blamed him. Her death may have caused him to come quietly. |

The Thenardiers the Thenadiers are semi-important in Javert's role in the book. The novel describes them reporting a kidnapping (though Valjean payed them off) after the ex-convict's supposed death and set him off to thinking that Valjean could very well be alive. Also, at the Gorbeau house, where the Thenardiers set a trap for Valjean to exort him, Javert siezed the house and discovered that Valjean escaped. It was Thenadier in the sewers that gave him Valjean instead of the thief.
